Theme: Health Informatics

Health informatics is a branch of science and engineering that apply informatics fields to medicine, brings together professionals with a range of backgrounds, including management professionals, computer specialists and healthcare professionals, and healthcare information professionals. It is at the intersection of information science, computer science, and healthcare dealing with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of data/information in health and biomedicine.

The health domain provides an extremely wide variety of problems that can be tackled using computational techniques. Health informatics is a spectrum of multidisciplinary fields that includes study of the design, development and application of computational innovations to improve health care.Though the  field began with a focus on developing systems such as medical records and information sharing, now has evolved into a field which has the potential to span the boundaries between health care professionals and patients. The domain includes applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare and designing medical devices based on embedded systems; modern applications of neuroinformatics and cognitive informatics in the fields of brain mapping and emulation; telemedicine; and informatics as used in the context of applying library science to data management in hospitals. It includes areas such as : complex medical decisions; evidence-based medicine; disease management; population health management.The sub domains are a vast array and include:

  • Medical image computing and imaging informatics
  • Cognitive informatics and artificial intelligence in healthcare
  • Neuroinformatics in healthcare
  • Brain mapping and simulation
  • Mind uploading
  • Medical signal processing
  • Computer engineering in healthcare
  • Medical robotics and autonomic computing
  • Telehealth and telemedicine
  • Archival science and databases in healthcare
  • Data science and knowledge representation in healthcare analyses)
  • Translational bioinformatics

Given the preponderance of AI across domains, Cognitive informatics and artificial intelligence in healthcare is probably one that has attracted much attention and action and led to many projects. Some of the big projects from top companies include : IBM’s Watson Oncology; Microsoft’s Hanover project, Google’s DeepMind platform and others.

This session will provide an overview of healthcare knowledge management, and explore, discuss, and suggest practical frameworks to deliver preventive, predictive and precision medicine to both empower physicians and engage patients in pursuing lifetime healthcare for all.
